For 30 years now, the Constitution of sovereign and independent Ukraine has been more than just a thick book of laws. It is a unique agreement between the state and its citizens on how we want to live together.
It sets forth the most important rules: what Ukraine is, what values it upholds, and what rights every person has. The Constitution reminds us that the state exists for the people, not the other way around.
The most valuable aspect of the Constitution is the rights and freedoms of its citizens. It states that every person has the right to life, dignity, education, work, medical care, and freedom of thought and speech.
We can elect our leaders, express our views, form civic organizations, defend our interests, and be equal before the law regardless of gender, age, background, or beliefs. This is the foundation upon which a democratic society is built.
But the Constitution is not just about rights — it’s also about responsibility. It reminds us that freedom works when people respect the rights of others, obey the law, and participate in the life of their country.
Essentially, the Constitution is about our shared belief that Ukraine can be a country where every person has the opportunity to live with dignity, grow, shape the future, and feel at home.
Happy Constitution Day of Ukraine!
