In communities experiencing instability, dialogue becomes a foundation for mutual understanding and social cohesion.
The training course “Dialogues in Communities. Facilitating Social Cohesion” helped participants master practical tools that enable people to talk to each other without conflict, but rather by listening. Such meetings create a space where everyone can safely express their opinions, share their experiences, and find common ground with others.
“The role of the facilitator in dialogue is key. She does not impose decisions or take sides. Her task is to maintain the structure of the conversation, follow the rules, and create an atmosphere of trust and equality. The facilitator helps people talk about important issues calmly, hear different positions, and not get “stuck” in emotional tension,“ said Natalia Stadnychuk, director and trainer at the NGO ”Space for Positive Change.”
“The facilitator’s competencies include active listening, neutrality, the ability to ask open-ended questions, working with group emotions, and creating conditions for safe interaction. She recognizes when tension is rising and helps participants return to constructive dialogue. The facilitator also knows how to work with vulnerable groups, maintain a balance of opinions, and ensure that every voice is heard,” added trainer and psychologist Olena Tsiysulnikova.
Thanks to the participation of dialogue facilitators, the community receives not just a conversation, but a high-quality process that leads to understanding, trust, and collective decisions. Dialogue becomes an instrument of sustainability: it allows people with different experiences to seek common ground, restore connections, and build a stronger, more cohesive community. And it is the facilitators who help this process come to life.
The training program is being implemented as part of the project “Workshop for Positive Change: Talk, Act, Influence,” which is being carried out by the NGO “Space for Positive Change” with the support of the Government of Canada as part of the project “Women. Peace. Security: From Local to Global,” implemented by the Ukrainian Women’s Fund.
