Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the All-Ukrainian campaign “16 Days Against Violence” is held worldwide. The aim of the campaign is to draw public attention to the problems of overcoming domestic violence, child abuse, combating human trafficking, and protecting women’s rights.
On December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly declared November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, but it has been celebrated since 1981 in memory of the tragic death of the three Mirabal sisters, who were brutally murdered during the dictatorship of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo in 1960.
During the sixteen-day campaign period, eight important dates are marked:
November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women;
December 1 – World AIDS Day;
December 2 – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery;
December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities;
December 5 – International Volunteer Day;
December 6 – Commemoration of the female students shot in Montreal;
December 10 – International Human Rights Day.
