On July 22, 1954, Ukraine (as part of the USSR) ratified the UN Convention on the Political Rights of Women (adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1952). This document became the first international treaty to explicitly enshrine the equality of women and men in political life.

The main provisions of the convention include three key provisions:

The right to vote: Women have the right to vote in all elections on an equal footing with men, without any discrimination.

The right to be elected: Women may be elected to all publicly elected bodies.

The right to hold office: Women have the right to hold public office and perform all public functions on an equal footing with men.
