Social Workers’ Day is a celebration of people who work every day alongside those who need support, care, and humanity.

The social sector in Ukraine is a complex system of state, municipal, public, and private institutions where specialists work every day to help others. They take care of the elderly, people with disabilities, large families, single parents, and anyone else who needs care and protection. Their work is often invisible to the general public, but it is what keeps society in balance, giving people a chance at a dignified life.

This profession requires not only knowledge and skills, but also great inner strength. Social workers are constantly confronted with pain, crises, trauma, and human stories that are not easy to leave “at the door.” Empathy, which is the main quality in this field, also becomes a vulnerability, as constant compassion can be emotionally draining.

Psychological burnout among social workers is a phenomenon that they encounter more often than in other professions. Constant stress, limited resources, great responsibility, and lack of time for personal recovery lead to decreased motivation, apathy, and emotional imbalance. They are used to helping others, but rarely allow themselves to be helped.

“That is why it is important not only to thank social workers for their work, but also to create spaces for them to receive support, supervision, and psychological recovery,” noted Natalia Stadnychuk, director of the NGO “Space for Positive Change.” “After all, only those who have resources and care for themselves can share them with others. Social Workers’ Day is a reminder of the value of this work and the need to protect those who protect others every day.”
